EEI has developed a nutrient balance model that considers various parameters including the meteorological factors, soil physics and chemistry, geology, hydrology and hydro-geology, vegetation and nutrient fate including biological, chemical and physical process. This model is applied to estimate the irrigation area to dispose of the treated wastewater. The model is based on a risk approach and combines both fundamental science and engineering practice. By this approach, we have often found that our NIMP requires much less irrigation area than the conventional approach based on Australia wide guidelines.
